1 CITY 5 WAYS: INDIANAPOLIS

Given its location and recent bad press, Indianapolis may not sit very high on your list of top travel destinations. But believe it or not, Indy ranks as one of the top 15 largest cities in the U.S. Aside from a few misguided politicians and leaders, Indianapolis is home to many progressive thinkers. While I may be a bit biased because it’s my hometown, Indy truly is worthy of visiting and has plenty to offer every type of traveler. Whether you prefer to learn about its history or experience more trendy locales, the Circle City has something for everyone. Here’s how to enjoy this 1 city 5 ways.

1. THE TRADITIONALIST

SEE: THE CIRCLE. Indianapolis is known as the “Circle City” because its city center is, quite literally, a circle. Here you’ll find the historic Soldiers & Sailors Monument, which happens to be the largest outdoor memorial in the state. There are also restaurants and coffee shops as well as festivals and parades that take place here throughout the year.

EAT: ST. ELMO. Built in 1902, St. Elmo Steakhouse is one of the oldest steakhouses in the city. While it does serve up delicious meats, it is best known for its flaming shrimp cocktail sauce. This historic haunt is a must for anyone looking to enjoy an Indy staple. The dirty martinis served upstairs at the 1933 Lounge are also not to be missed!

DO: INDIANAPOLIS 500. Indy may be famous for basketball, but it is the historic Indianapolis 500 race that draws visitors from around the world. If you’re wanting a truly traditional Indianapolis experience, the 500 which takes place each May at the famed Motor Speedway is where it’s at!

2. THE LUXURY LOVER

SEE: INDIANAPOLIS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA. Those looking for a more luxurious experience won’t be disappointed. The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra is world renowned and offers a variety of shows year round. The holidays are a particularly good time to attend!

EAT: THE EAGLE’S NEST. If you’re in search of a unique and elegant dining experience, the Eagle’s Nest is the answer. This revolving rooftop restaurant sits atop the downtown Hyatt Hotel and offers panoramic views of the city.

DO: THE FASHION MALL. Those in the market for a designer hand bag or gown will find it at the Fashion Mall. This newly renovated shopping center is home to numerous high end designer stores ready to provide serious retail therapy.

3. THE BUDGET TRAVELER

SEE: THE MONON TRAIL. Those who prefer to enjoy the city without opening their wallets can do so by lacing up their walking shoes and exploring the Monon Trail. This pedestrian pathway spans several miles, stretches as far north as 171st street in Westfield, cuts through Broad Ripple Village and ends downtown at 10th street. There it intersects with the Indianapolis Cultural Trail. It is the perfect way to spend an afternoon outdoors without spending a dime.

EAT: KONA GRILL. If you’re in the mood for delicious sushi at a great price, then you must check out Kona Grill. This restaurant is located in Carmel’s Clay Terrace outdoor mall and offers ½ price sushi during happy hour. The best part is happy hour takes place TWICE a day Monday through Saturday and ALL DAY SUNDAY! If sushi isn’t your thing, appetizers are also ½ off along with various cocktail and wine specials.

DO:BASEBALL/HOCKEY/SOCCER. Indianapolis is known as a sports town, but don’t think you have to spend hundreds on tickets to enjoy a game. You can attend an Indianapolis Indians baseball game, an Indy Fuel hockey game or an Indy 11 soccer match even if you’re on a budget. It is guaranteed fun for everyone!

4. THE ROMANTIC

SEE: INDIANAPOLIS MUSEUM OF ART. If you’re looking for romance, grab your significant other and head to the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Get lost in winding halls of the museum or dine at the contemporary café, but be sure to leave some time to explore the surrounding gardens. They are lush, whimsical and provide the perfect backdrop for stealing a kiss!

EAT: THE MELTING POT. Those in the mood for a romantic dining experience should indulge at the Melting Pot located on the city’s Northside. Choose from a selection of cheese fondues followed by a decadent dessert of melted chocolate and fresh seasonal fruit.

DO: THE CANAL. For a romantic outing, take a stroll along the canal downtown. You can rent a paddle boat or a gondola and stare up at the twinkling city lights. It’s sure the get the romance started!

5. THE TRENDY TRAVELER

SEE: FOUNTAIN SQUARE. Located just south of downtown Indianapolis, Fountain Square was once a forgotten neighborhood that has seen a resurgence in recent years. From quirky bars and restaurants to new residential constructions and boutiques, this side of town is definitely up and coming!

EAT: SHOEFLY PUBLIC HOUSE. Care for a pulled pork sandwich served on a crispy waffle or duck wings tossed in bourbon apple butter? Or perhaps a grapefruit and basil infused craft cocktail is more your style.  Whatever you’re in the mood for, Shoefly is sure to satisfy even the most eclectic foodie.

DO: MASS AVE. Massachusetts Avenue, located a few minutes northeast of downtown, may just be the most trendy area in the city. Here you’ll find adorable boutiques, hip bars and restaurants, local art galleries and gorgeous condos. This neighborhood is constantly changing and just keeps getting better!
