City Guides NYC

SEE NYC FOR FREE!

Lower Manhattan skyline

New York is known for being one of the most expensive cities in the world. From restaurants and hotels to shopping and nightlife, a weekend in the Big Apple can leave you with a hefty tab. Despite the price tag, I feel so lucky to be able to call NYC home. Throughout the years, I’ve discovered ways to enjoy some of this great city’s main attractions and the best part is…it’s all FREE!

Brooklyn Bridge

BROOKLYN BRIDGE

I suggest starting in Brooklyn. Yes, Brooklyn! There was a time when many thought this borough should be avoided, but times have changed and these days it’s referred to as the “New Manhattan”. Ignore the haters and make your way to the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge. To get there, just take a Brooklyn bound A or C train and exit at High Street. Stop for a slice at Grimaldi’s or a cone at the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory. Just be warned, both will have lines out the door in the summer. Then make your way over to the bridge. It’s of the most famous landmarks in the city, if not the world, and for good reason. Its unique architecture is something to behold and the sweeping panoramic views are well worth the trip. On a clear day, there is no better view of Manhattan.

Statue of Liberty New York City

STATUE OF LIBERTY

A symbol of independence and hope and one of the most iconic attractions in the big apple, Lady Liberty is a must see for most visitors. Once you exit the Brooklyn Bridge, just head south towards Battery Park and you’ll spot her off in the distance.   Now, you can wait in a horribly long line, buy a pricey ticket to take a tour boat over to the island, walk around the base of the statue and end up with a slew of photos taken at odd angles. ORRRRRR you can hop on the FREE Staten Island Ferry, which runs every half hour and passes right by the Statue of Liberty giving you the perfect vantage for capturing great pics. You can even check out Staten Island if you’re so inclined!

911 Memorial in New York City

9/11 MEMORIAL

The next stop is the World Trade Center where the Twin Towers once stood. The site is now home to the 9/11 Memorial, which features two large reflecting pools engraved with nearly 3,000 names of victims from that horrible tragedy. I walked past many times while the area was still under construction and later visited the memorial when it first opened to the public.   It was a truly haunting experience for me. Looking at the names etched in stone, many of which had been adorned with flags and flowers.  Listening to the overwhelming rush of the infinity fountain left me feeling unsettled, as though I were peering into an abyss. Nevertheless, this is an important stop to make for anyone visiting the city. (Note, visiting the memorial is free, but the museum requires ticket purchase).

Wall Street Bull & New York Stock Exchange

WALL STREET

Close by is The Charging Bull sculpture. Representing the Financial District, this installation is a popular tourist stop. And once again, totally FREE! Just around the corner is the New York Stock Exchange. An impressive building not so much for its architecture, but definitely as an undeniable symbol of American capitalism.

New York County Supreme Court Building

NEW YORK SUPREME COURT

The next stop may not be on everyone’s list, but I find the New York County Supreme Court to be one of the more impressive landmarks in the city. It has been featured in countless movies and TV shows and as an attorney, I was particularly thrilled the first time I had to appear there for a case.

Chinatown New York City

 CHINA TOWN

About a 15 minute walk from the Civic Center is China Town. Anyone interested in snagging knockoff designer wares should not pass up this spot. Even if you don’t plan on (illegally) purchasing any fake goods, I think you’ll find China Town to be entertaining for its unique restaurants, shops, and architecture.

Little Italy in New York City

LITTLE ITALY

A few blocks away is Little Italy. You’ll come across some excellent dining options here that will make you question whether you’re in New York or Roma! If you’re lucky enough to be in town during the Feast of San Gennaro, which takes place in September, then you’re in for quite a treat! The streets come to life with live music, parades and all kinds of delicious goodies. Calzones, pizza, cannoli…you name it they got it!

Spring Lounge hot dogs and Georgetown cupcakes in New York City

FREE EATS

Hungry yet?! Well, you’re in luck! Believe it or not, there are a few special places where you can snag a delicious bite FOR FREE. Nothing says New York City quite like a hot dog.  Spring Lounge in SoHo serves up this classic American delicacy. But they aren’t just any ol’ dog, these babies are gourmet, mouthwatering and best of all FREE (every Wednesday starting at 5pm).  Don’t be late, they go fast!

Anyone have a sweet tooth? If so, you’re speaking my language! The ladies of the famed Georgetown Cupcakes (featured on the TLC show DC Cupcakes) have an adorable little bakery in SoHo. Each morning they tweet out a flavor of the day that will earn you a free cupcake if you’re one of the first 100 customers to recite the flavor while in the store.

If you’re in search of a perfect New York style slice, then as you make your way to midtown, pay a visit to the fellas at 99 Cent Fresh Pizza located 43 and 3rd. The name literally says it all and at 99¢ a slice it’s about as close to free as you can get!

Macy's on 34th windows in the spring

MACY’S on 34th STREET

Known for its elaborate window displays, endless shopping and famous Thanksgiving Day parade, this is one stop that does not disappoint and is sure to get everyone in the holiday spirit! And don’t miss the festive Saks Fifth Avenue light show set to holiday tunes.  If you happen to be passing by, it’s definitely worth watching!
